Combustion of fossil fuels causes emission of carbon dioxide is responsible for the phenomenon known as “global warming”. Global warming is the increase of the earth’s average temperature, resulting in the rise of sea levels and unstable world climate. By using energy intelligently, one can help decrease the need for fossil fuels, which will result in the reduction of global warming.

One of the little things you can do to reduce waste is choose reusable products with recyclable packaging. Spend a little time sorting your waste into paper, plastic and glass recycle bins. If there is no recycling center near to you, suggest to your local council to have one established. Most communities have theirs in convenient places that people visit weekly anyway, such as supermarkets or shopping malls.

Another way to reduce carbon dioxide emission is to reduce the use of heating and air-conditioning in your home and workplace. Add insulation to the walls of your home will significantly lower your electricity costs, thus reduce the amount of energy you use. Instead of using air-conditioning, install fans that require less electricity. Turn down or switch off your heating unit or air-conditioning when you are away. Teach your housemates or family to do the same. This should be a combined effort, which will also translate to a lower electricity bill.

Learning to use the “off” switch can mean many things. Switch off the lights when you leave a room. Turn off the television and computer when you are done using it. Turn off the water tap when while you brush your teeth. Turn off the shower when you shampoo, just be careful you don’t get any in your eyes! Water conservation is equally important is reducing global warming.

Using hot water only during the winter, learn about the settings so you know which setting is most energy efficient. Air-dry dishes instead of using a dishwasher save energy. Collect all your clothes that need to be washed in hot water, so that you can do it in one shot. Wash clothes in warm water would be a better option. Turn off the water tap when you wash the dishes, and turn it on slow when it is time to rinse.

Try making informed and intelligent decisions when purchasing products. When buying a car, look for one that is fuel efficient, which not only save you money in the long run, but will also reduce emission of greenhouse gases. Buy products that are recyclable or have minimal packaging. This saves energy when it comes to waste disposal. Learn about energy efficient electrical appliances. Change the type of light bulb you use to compact fluorescent ones that use less energy compared to standard light bulbs.

Making small changes in your own garden can also help reduce global warming. Plant more trees. Not only will you reap the benefits by doing something productive, you will also manage to create a cooler environment for your home. Encourage others to conserve and recycle. Education remains the key in dealing with global warming.
